The choice of this image as the cover for Puñal de Claveles establishes a dialogue between two creative gestures separated by almost a century, yet united by a shared critical and poetic sensibility. The novel — one of the final works of Carmen de Burgos, known as “Colombine” (1867–1932) — encapsulates her lifelong commitment as a pioneering advocate for women’s rights.

Inspired by the 1928 Cortijo del Fraile crime, which shocked the nation, Colombine transforms the real event into a liberating and profoundly human narrative.
The story marked a milestone in the social literature of its time and went on to influence Federico García Lorca in the creation of Blood Wedding, one of the pinnacles of modern theatre.
The image on this edition’s cover is taken from the diptych Las Negras (2012), a work by María Bisbal based on paintings made during a journey to Almería — the geographical and emotional setting of the novel. Its muted palette, the intensity of the forms, and the atmospheric weight echo the dramatic tension of Colombine’s text.

The book features a foreword by Teresa Muñoz Pinillos (Toledo, 1981), a specialist in the life and work of Carmen de Burgos.
